After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Drake Maye is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
Every board in the league had McMahon lower, and that gap is the story. Landing Coleman that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend.
The Solomon pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots still on the board. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 3 they get a franchise quarterback. A real need, handled.
They jumped the gun on Kingsley Suamataia, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The roster fit checks out.
They barely believed it either: Keon Coleman still on the board at the Round 3 slot. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No drama and no debate, Cam Hart went about where he belonged in the 88th pick. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots still to address, they spent Round 4, Pick 4 on Javon Solomon, an OLB-EDGE they were not short of.
By-the-book stuff, Christian Jones at slot 136 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Value with a capital V on Ben Sinnott in the 140th overall pick, a genuine coup. It fills a real need, too.
Elijah Jones in No. 182 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Daijun Edwards at the 204th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Dylan McMahon at pick 229 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
