Call it larceny. Cody Simon sat on the board until the 249th overall pick, and the Cowboys did not need to be asked twice. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
The Hawes reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
Nothing to complain about; Josh Simmons went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jalon Walker in the Round 2 slot, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Steal is underselling it; Omarion Hampton at Round 3, Pick 12 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A wide receiver of that caliber at pick 85 is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
You do not let a tight end like Gunnar Helm reach the 116th overall pick and blink. They did not. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
TreVeyon Henderson in the 150th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Barrett Carter at slot 170 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board fumbled Dylan Sampson all the way to No. 172, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They robbed the room for Jake Majors here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Circle this one: Lathan Ransom at No. 190 is a fall that decides a draft. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Joshua Gray slid further than he should have, and pick No. 191 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jackson Hawes in Round 6, Pick 33 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
They will replay Cody Simon at the Round 7 slot for years; that is how good the value is. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
