Somebody in the Round 2 slot was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Packers sat still while Keon Coleman, the No. 24 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. They will need Hopper to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 27th overall pick they get a potential shutdown corner, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
Taking Kool-Aid McKinstry in pick 43 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Keon Coleman in Round 2, Pick 25 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
Nice patience on Blake Corum, who had no business lasting to No. 88. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Tykee Smith in pick No. 92 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
You do not let a cornerback like Caelen Carson reach slot 97 and blink. They did not. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Matt Goncalves at the Round 4 slot is the proof. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A wild overpay on Ty'Ron Hopper in the 135th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
