The 49ers did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and CJ Allen fell into the Round 2 slot. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it. The cost of the Dunker reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 27 they get a blindside protector, though the board says they badly overpaid. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Somehow CJ Allen was still sitting there in the 58th overall pick, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jack Endries in slot 127. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Beau Stephens in Round 4, Pick 33, miles early. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They robbed the room for Jalon Kilgore here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
DeMonte Capehart is a better player than No. 139 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
