You could see the war room lean forward. Frank Gore Jr. at the 186th pick is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
They will need Haynes to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Good work on the whole, with cornerback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 24 they get a long-term starter on the line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Christian Haynes well ahead of where he belonged. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No drama and no debate, Marist Liufau went about where he belonged in slot 87. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Junior Colson at No. 124 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Somehow Ainias Smith was still sitting there in the Round 5 slot, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Frank Gore Jr. in the 186th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It fills a real need, too.
