The value of the weekend has a name and a slot: Jaylin Simpson, Round 6, Pick 27, roughly 44 picks past where he belonged. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
Reaching for Byrd left real value on the table behind him. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. The Wallace pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback, wide receiver and other spots still on the board.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get a plug-and-play piece up front, though they paid up to get him. A real need, handled.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Junior Colson. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Javon Bullard in the Round 2 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Kris Abrams-Draine at the 88th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Roger Rosengarten at pick 91 squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A curious use of No. 126. Quarterback, wide receiver and other spots needed the pick; a linebacker in Trevin Wallace did not.
Nice patience on Mason McCormick, who had no business lasting to slot 169. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board fumbled Jaylin Simpson all the way to the 202nd overall pick, and they scooped it up. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Emani Bailey in slot 219, miles early. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They talked themselves into Jalen Sundell at No. 245, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
Solomon Byrd at pick 255 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
