Las Vegas Raiders

A franchise passer in Mendoza headlines a B- weekend for the Raiders.

You can hear the double-takes from here. The Raiders took Justin Jefferson at Round 4, Pick 17, roughly 81 spots before his name belonged. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.

Fernando Mendoza gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Moore pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.

They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.1 · Pick 1 · Fernando Mendoza · QB · rank 4
In No. 1 they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Max Iheanachor · OT · rank 47
A reach for Max Iheanachor in pick No. 36; a little patience would have been rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Ja'Kobi Lane · WR · rank 94
They talked themselves into Ja'Kobi Lane at the Round 3 slot, and the board did not agree. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · Devin Moore · CB · rank 87
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Devin Moore in the 102nd overall pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.17 · Pick 117 · Justin Jefferson · LB · rank 198
Justin Jefferson at the 117th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R4.34 · Pick 134 · Parker Brailsford · C · rank 124
They let Parker Brailsford come to them and pounced at pick 134. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.35 · Pick 175 · Kaleb Proctor · DL · rank 168
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 5 slot with a little surplus value in Kaleb Proctor. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R6.1 · Pick 182 · Aamil Wagner · OT · rank 169
Nice patience on Aamil Wagner, who had no business lasting to Round 6, Pick 1. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R6.4 · Pick 185 · Ephesians Prysock · CB · rank 186
They paid sticker price for Ephesians Prysock in slot 185, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.27 · Pick 208 · Harrison Wallace III · WR · rank 204
Harrison Wallace III at the 208th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.3 · Pick 219 · Diego Pavia · QB · rank 230
Diego Pavia in pick 219 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The roster fit checks out.
