There is reaching, and then there is George Gumbs Jr. at pick 162. The Ravens jumped the board by 32 and dared it to prove them wrong. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
The Slaughter steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 18 they get a matchup weapon at tight end at fair value. A real need, handled.
Omar Cooper Jr. slid further than he should have, and No. 45 is lovely value for the wide receiver. The roster fit checks out.
Lee Hunter in the 49th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Jake Slaughter reach the Round 3 slot and blink. They did not. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Malik Muhammad at the 115th pick is the proof. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Charles Demmings at slot 154 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They reached into another round for George Gumbs Jr., and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A need, and now a little less of one.
Value with a capital V on Demond Claiborne in the 173rd pick, a genuine coup. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
No edge and no loss on Aamil Wagner in Round 5, Pick 34; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
By-the-book stuff, Aaron Graves at the Round 6 slot squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
