The Broncos bet big and early on Kamran James, 90 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.
Pick-by-Pick
Value with a capital V on Sonny Styles in pick No. 33, a genuine coup. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Caleb Banks at the 35th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A real head-scratcher, Eli Raridon in No. 62 is miles ahead of his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A premium they did not need to pay, Darrell Jackson Jr. a notch or two before his time. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Kaytron Allen. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Tacario Davis is a better player than slot 111 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Jeff Caldwell at the 170th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Bryce Foster at slot 209 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They paid sticker price for Nolan Rucci in No. 246, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Colbie Young at pick No. 256 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They talked themselves into Kamran James at Round 7, Pick 41, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
