The board owed the Packers one, and it paid up: Anthony Gould, the No. 142 name on the board, sitting there at pick 202 like a gift left on the doorstep. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. Cooper has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made. Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 21st pick they get an anchor for the offensive line. A clean fit for the roster.
Edgerrin Cooper at the Round 2 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Steal is underselling it; T'Vondre Sweat at pick 67 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board fumbled Kamren Kinchens all the way to slot 88, and they scooped it up. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Circle this one: DJ James at No. 100 is a fall that decides a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Javon Foster in Round 4, Pick 26 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Taking James Williams in the 169th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
The board had Cody Schrader higher than pick No. 184, and the running back fell to them anyway. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They will replay Anthony Gould at slot 202 for years; that is how good the value is. It fills a real need, too.
Somehow Kamal Hadden was still sitting there in pick No. 219, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Keaton Bills in Round 7, Pick 25 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Myles Harden in the 255th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
