New England Patriots

The Patriots landed square in the muddy middle: C.

Some picks age like wine; Phillip Webb at the Round 3 slot will need to, sitting 201 spots clear of his grade.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

If Travis Hunter and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.1 · Pick 1 · Travis Hunter · CB · rank 1
In pick 1 they get a ballhawk on the outside at fair value. More want than need.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Trey Zuhn III · OT · rank 190
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Trey Zuhn III well ahead of where he belonged. The roster fit checks out.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Elijhah Badger · WR · rank 259
Elijhah Badger at the 67th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.15 · Pick 79 · Phillip Webb · DL-EDGE · rank 280
Phillip Webb at the 79th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.2 · Pick 103 · Garrett Dellinger · OG · rank 248
Garrett Dellinger at slot 103 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R5.1 · Pick 138 · Quincy Riley · CB · rank 219
This one needs a full-page explanation: Quincy Riley in No. 138, miles early. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
R7.3 · Pick 219 · Dominick Blaylock · WR · rank 360
Dominick Blaylock in pick 219 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Reggie Grimes II · DL-EDGE · rank 415
Reggie Grimes II at the 220th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.22 · Pick 238 · Stephen Dix Jr. · LB · rank 421
Value said wait; Stephen Dix Jr. in No. 238 says they were not listening. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
