The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Jayden Daniels, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
On value alone, Simpson makes the weekend a net positive. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd overall pick they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
They paid sticker price for Xavier Legette in the 34th pick, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No drama and no debate, Patrick Paul went about where he belonged in pick No. 68. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Bucky Irving in the Round 4 slot. It fills a real need, too.
James Williams at pick 137 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A minor itch, scratched.
Trevor Keegan in No. 180 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The roster fit checks out.
Jaylin Simpson in slot 193 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
The board fumbled Isaiah Williams all the way to Round 7, Pick 11, and they scooped it up. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
