You could see the war room lean forward. Smael Mondon Jr. at slot 168 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.
Uiagalelei has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 12 they get a home-run threat at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Omarion Hampton at the Round 2 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They robbed the room for Jihaad Campbell here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board fumbled Deone Walker all the way to the 89th overall pick, and they scooped it up. It fills a real need, too.
Steal is underselling it; Gunnar Helm at the 126th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Somehow Jake Majors was still sitting there in pick 148, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Taking Lathan Ransom in pick No. 160 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Smael Mondon Jr. in slot 168, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A reach on Chandler Rivers in the 170th overall pick; the board had better options right there. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in pick 171 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A wild overpay on Tosh Baker in the 187th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
DJ Uiagalelei at No. 209 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jack Kiser in Round 7, Pick 31 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
