The Kalil Alexander pick is the one that will follow the Steelers into the fall. They took him 58 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. On value alone, Muhammad makes the weekend a net positive. Spending an early pick on offensive lineman with safety, running back and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
For all the activity, safety went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 21 they get a blindside protector at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
They paid a round early for Jacob Rodriguez in pick 44, more than the board wanted. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Zachariah Branch at the Round 3 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ted Hurst. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No edge and no loss on Jalon Kilgore in Round 3, Pick 35; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Malik Muhammad in the 121st pick, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A surprising call. With safety, running back and other spots still to address, they spent slot 135 on Isaiah World, an offensive lineman they were not short of.
Taylen Green at the 161st overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Nick Barrett well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They took Kaden Wetjen at par in Round 7, Pick 8, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Kalil Alexander. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A slide stopped in No. 237, with TJ Hall worth more than the price. The roster fit checks out.
