The Cowboys torched the value chart for DJ Uiagalelei, taking him 86 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
Landing Simon that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 20 they get a centerpiece for the ground game, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
Circle this one: Walter Nolen at pick No. 44 is a fall that decides a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
A straight-up fair deal on Jared Ivey at the 76th pick, value and slot in agreement. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Savion Williams in pick 85 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Taking Charles Grant in slot 121 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, O'Donnell Fortune in the 150th overall pick, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Somehow Cody Simon was still sitting there in the 170th pick, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Oronde Gadsden II in the Round 5 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A reach on Connor Colby in pick No. 174; the board had better options right there. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jaylen Reed. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They left a pile of value on the table to take DJ Uiagalelei this early at slot 211. It fills a real need, too.
They paid up for Donovan Edwards at No. 249 when waiting would have done the job. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
