After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Drake Maye is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. On value alone, Jones makes the weekend a net positive.
Every board in the league had Paul lower, and that gap is the story.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 3 they get a franchise quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
They liked Patrick Paul enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 37. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A straight-up fair deal on Ricky Pearsall at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They took Beau Brade at par in the 103rd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Marshawn Kneeland. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Dylan Laube at pick 139 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Christian Jones in Round 6, Pick 23 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jase McClellan at pick No. 224 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Myles Jones at pick 225 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. It adds depth where they could use a little.
