The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Drake Maye, and the whole operation now runs on his development.
The Wiley pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. The veteran additions, Jack Conklin chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Mims.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 3 they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value. A real need, handled.
Nice patience on Amarius Mims, who had no business lasting to slot 34. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
DJ James in the 96th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A tidy little value on Jalen McMillan in the Round 4 slot, a step better than break-even. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
By-the-book stuff, Tyler Davis at the 115th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A tidy bit of business in Round 4, Pick 36, where Jamari Thrash graded well above the range. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jared Wiley in No. 182 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid up for Brevyn Spann-Ford at pick No. 229 when waiting would have done the job. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
