The Patriots did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Troy Fautanu fell into No. 68. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 3 they get a No. 1 receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Bo Nix at Round 2, Pick 2 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It fills a real need, too.
Taking Troy Fautanu in pick 68 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
Brandon Dorlus at the 103rd overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Blake Fisher at pick No. 137 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Circle this one: Luke McCaffrey at slot 180 is a fall that decides a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Sione Vaki at the Round 6 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
