You build a draft on nights like this. Tyler Shough had no business being available in the 234th overall pick, and the Cowboys did the only sane thing and turned in the card. The final tally is a middling C.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end.
The Cowboys clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
In the end, one you will need a couple of seasons to truly judge.
Pick-by-Pick
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Ashton Jeanty in the 14th overall pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Kelvin Banks Jr. reach pick No. 37 and blink. They did not. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Will Johnson at Round 2, Pick 13 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Nice patience on Deone Walker, who had no business lasting to slot 76. It fills a real need, too.
Circle this one: Jared Ivey at the Round 4 slot is a fall that decides a draft. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Isaiah Bond in No. 116 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They robbed the room for Smael Mondon Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Somehow Hollin Pierce was still sitting there in pick 171, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A linebacker of that caliber at No. 172 is the definition of value, full stop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board fumbled Kalel Mullings all the way to pick 174, and they scooped it up. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, Vernon Broughton in the Round 6 slot, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They will replay Tyler Shough at the 234th pick for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
They barely believed it either: KeAndre Lambert-Smith still on the board at Round 7, Pick 31. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
