New England Patriots

The Patriots fleeced the room on the phones and earned a A-.

There is reaching, and then there is Antario Brown at Round 7, Pick 21. The Patriots jumped the board by 69 and dared it to prove them wrong.

They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Lawson.

In the end it comes back to Emery Jones Jr., and a haul good enough to build on right away.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.19 · Pick 19 · Emery Jones Jr. · OT · rank 29
In slot 19 they get a long-term starter on the line, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Colston Loveland · TE · rank 65
Colston Loveland at the 36th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R2.20 · Pick 52 · Jalon Walker · LB-EDGE · rank 66
They went early on Jalon Walker in the 52nd overall pick, and the value did not follow. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Deontae Lawson · LB · rank 54
A slide stopped in Round 3, Pick 3, with Deontae Lawson worth more than the price. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R3.19 · Pick 83 · T.J. Sanders · DT · rank 85
They took T.J. Sanders at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.33 · Pick 97 · Malachi Moore · S · rank 88
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 97, where Malachi Moore graded well above the range. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R4.2 · Pick 103 · Tacario Davis · CB · rank 103
Tacario Davis at slot 103 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor itch, scratched.
R5.1 · Pick 139 · Theo Wease Jr. · WR · rank 137
No drama and no debate, Theo Wease Jr. went about where he belonged in pick No. 139. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.2 · Pick 140 · Donovan Edwards · RB · rank 145
Donovan Edwards in the 140th pick is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.3 · Pick 217 · Tony Grimes · CB · rank 209
The board had Tony Grimes higher than the 217th overall pick, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
R7.6 · Pick 220 · Kyren Lacy · WR · rank 219
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kyren Lacy. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.21 · Pick 235 · Antario Brown · RB · rank 304
A big swing on Antario Brown at pick 235, well ahead of any board in the building. The roster fit checks out.
