The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. They moved the roster forward and banked a B+ for it.
The Torrence pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Adding Jamaree Salyer by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
The trade work was a quiet net positive.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 3 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value.
They read the board right and Kool-Aid McKinstry was the payoff at the 37th overall pick. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They did well to land Kiran Amegadjie in pick No. 68, just ahead of his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A safety of that caliber at No. 103 is the definition of value, full stop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A straight-up fair deal on Anthony Gould at the Round 5 slot, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid sticker price for Jha'Quan Jackson in the 180th pick, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Somehow Ro Torrence was still sitting there in pick 231, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
They took Sam Hartman at par in Round 7, Pick 33, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
