Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Commanders were there to profit. Kris Abrams-Draine, the No. 120 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick No. 181. No fireworks, but a solid B+.
Drake Maye gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. The Gore Jr. pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up.
Job largely done: tight end settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 2 they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. A real need, handled.
Olumuyiwa Fashanu at the 36th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They will replay Amarius Mims at pick 40 for years; that is how good the value is. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A straight-up fair deal on Zach Frazier at the 67th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A big swing on Darius Robinson at pick No. 100, well ahead of any board in the building. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Value said wait; Frank Gore Jr. in the 141st pick says they were not listening. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Circle this one: Kris Abrams-Draine at slot 181 is a fall that decides a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Taking Jared Wiley in the Round 7 slot is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
