The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. Just about everything broke right, and the A- follows.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. They are betting McLachlan proves the room right and everyone else wrong. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
The Williams value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
In the end it comes back to Drake Maye, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 9th overall pick they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
The board had cheaper options than T.J. Tampa at slot 34, and it noticed. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They jumped the gun on Xavier Worthy, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Austin Booker in the 68th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No drama and no debate, Will Shipley went about where he belonged in the Round 4 slot. The roster fit checks out.
They paid sticker price for Isaiah Adams in pick 137, and that is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
They reached into another round for Tanner McLachlan, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Curtis Jacobs in No. 193 is fair value, right on his grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A slide stopped in No. 231, with Evan Williams worth more than the price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
