Call it belief, call it a gut call, but CJ West at the 174th pick is 38 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline.
The Reed pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Job largely done: cornerback settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 12 they get a three-down runner, outstanding value to boot.
Fair-plus on Jihaad Campbell, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They let Deone Walker come to them and pounced at the 76th overall pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Emery Jones Jr. reach pick No. 150 and blink. They did not. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They barely believed it either: Tommi Hill still on the board at pick 170. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They talked themselves into Nazir Stackhouse at Round 5, Pick 33, and the board did not agree. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A big swing on CJ West at the Round 5 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid sticker price for Karene Reid in Round 6, Pick 12, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A safety of that caliber at pick No. 211 is the definition of value, full stop. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and John Williams at slot 249 is the proof. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
