Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Sam Roush got past him. The Dolphins do not have to explain a thing at pick 130.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. The Taaffe pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots still on the board. The Moore pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 11th overall pick they get a potential shutdown corner at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
In pick No. 30 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A real need, handled.
Derrick Moore in the 43rd pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Taking A.J. Haulcy in the Round 3 slot is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A minor need, but a need all the same.
The board fumbled Caleb Tiernan all the way to pick 87, and they scooped it up. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Value with a capital V on Malachi Fields in No. 90, a genuine coup. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Michael Taaffe in slot 94 leaves quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots for later.
Steal is underselling it; Sam Roush at Round 4, Pick 30 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Eli Raridon in the Round 5 slot. A need, and now a little less of one.
Kendrick Law in Round 7, Pick 11 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
By-the-book stuff, Desmond Reid at the 238th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
