The board owed the Cowboys one, and it paid up: Cam Ward, the No. 8 name on the board, sitting there at slot 174 like a gift left on the doorstep.
The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Job largely done: cornerback settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Good work on the whole, with wide receiver the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 12 they get a double-digit-sack hope at a price that makes it sweeter. Need was not the driver here.
The board fumbled Ashton Jeanty all the way to the Round 2 slot, and they scooped it up. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Taking Jahdae Barron in Round 3, Pick 12 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Walter Nolen in slot 150 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It fills a real need, too.
Circle this one: Armand Membou at the 170th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Somehow Jihaad Campbell was still sitting there in No. 172, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Steal is underselling it; Cam Ward at the 174th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
