The Packers treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending slot 203 on Trevor Keegan a full 23 spots early. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
It is not that Mustapha is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Tampa.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 31 they get a centerfielder for the defense. More want than need.
Patrick Paul in pick No. 41 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, T.J. Tampa at the Round 2 slot. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Christian Mahogany at No. 91 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Ray Davis in the 98th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A conviction pick on Malik Washington at the 108th pick that the board grades a round light. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No edge and no loss on Cedric Gray in the Round 4 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A want over a need in No. 135: Malik Mustapha adds a safety while edge rusher and tight end keeps waiting.
Braelon Allen in pick No. 148 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reach on Jordan Jefferson in slot 166; the board had better options right there. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Trevor Keegan in Round 6, Pick 28, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
They took David Ugwoegbu at par in the 217th pick, which is nothing to complain about. This was not a hole anyone had circled.
A straight-up fair deal on Daequan Hardy at pick 219, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board had Kedon Slovis higher than the 246th overall pick, and the quarterback fell to them anyway. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
