You build a draft on nights like this. T.J. Tampa had no business being available in the Round 3 slot, and the Cowboys did the only sane thing and turned in the card. A near-flawless weekend of work, and a A- to cap it.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
Adding Creed Humphrey by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
Trust the process, because this time the process plainly worked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 32 they get a cornerstone up front, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
Brian Thomas Jr. in pick 56 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, T.J. Tampa in pick No. 89, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Value with a capital V on Isaiah Davis in Round 5, Pick 37, a genuine coup. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Nathaniel Watson at the 213th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Steal is underselling it; JD Bertrand at the Round 7 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Frank Gore Jr. at slot 242 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
