When a board-topper like Dillon Gabriel slides to pick No. 172, you do not overthink it, and the Cowboys did not. Good, not great, and the B+ says as much.
The cost of the Jackson reach is exactly the players who went right after him. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The trade work was a quiet net positive.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 15 they get a matchup problem out wide, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Steal is underselling it; Shemar Stewart at the 44th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They paid up for Donovan Jackson at pick No. 76 when waiting would have done the job. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They robbed the room for Jeffrey Bassa here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A quiet steal in No. 170: Damien Martinez for less than the market said. It fills a real need, too.
You do not let a quarterback like Dillon Gabriel reach Round 5, Pick 33 and blink. They did not. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Cobee Bryant in the 174th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Cam Jackson in the 190th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The roster fit checks out.
The board had cheaper options than Jamon Dumas-Johnson at slot 211, and it noticed. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kitan Crawford in the Round 7 slot. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
