Give the war room a raise for the dealing alone. The Patriots came out ahead on every exchange that mattered, and it was not close. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
Horn Jr. has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Winston Jr. at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
The veteran additions, DK Metcalf chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.11
· Pick 11
· Will Campbell
· OT
· rank 10
In the Round 1 slot they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. A real need, handled.
R2.7
· Pick 39
· Tate Ratledge
· OG
· rank 34
A clean, defensible pick in the 39th overall pick with a little surplus value in Tate Ratledge. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R2.9
· Pick 41
· Abdul Carter
· DE-EDGE
· rank 38
Good price on Abdul Carter in the 41st pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.8
· Pick 72
· Barrett Carter
· LB
· rank 54
A linebacker of that caliber at slot 72 is the definition of value, full stop. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R3.22
· Pick 86
· Ollie Gordon II
· RB
· rank 83
Ollie Gordon II at No. 86 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R4.5
· Pick 106
· Kevin Winston Jr.
· S
· rank 86
They will replay Kevin Winston Jr. at Round 4, Pick 5 for years; that is how good the value is. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.7
· Pick 108
· Elic Ayomanor
· WR
· rank 92
They let Elic Ayomanor come to them and pounced at pick No. 108. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R5.6
· Pick 144
· Jaeden Roberts
· OG
· rank 135
A quiet steal in pick 144: Jaeden Roberts for less than the market said. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.4
· Pick 218
· Julian Fleming
· WR
· rank 208
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Julian Fleming in slot 218. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.6
· Pick 220
· Kyren Lacy
· WR
· rank 217
Nothing to complain about; Kyren Lacy went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.22
· Pick 236
· Jimmy Horn Jr.
· WR
· rank 265
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jimmy Horn Jr. well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R7.42
· Pick 256
· Oronde Gadsden II
· TE
· rank 272
The board had cheaper options than Oronde Gadsden II at pick 256, and it noticed. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
