Boards are made to be trusted, and the Cowboys shredded theirs for Jaylan Ford. He came off 34 spots early, and the room will hear about it. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
That Jones pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 28 they get a building block for the line. Exactly the need they had to hit.
The board had cheaper options than Xavier Legette at No. 60, and it noticed. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid sticker price for Trey Benson in pick 87, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They jumped the gun on DeWayne Carter, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The roster fit checks out.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Brenden Rice in the 99th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Christian Jones at the Round 4 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Nice patience on Jarrian Jones, who had no business lasting to pick No. 159. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jaylan Ford at the 161st overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Nathaniel Watson at slot 213 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
