There is reaching, and then there is R.J. Oben at the 220th overall pick. The Patriots jumped the board by 141 and dared it to prove them wrong. The bottom line is a respectable B.
That Winston Jr. pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Adding Ja'Marr Chase by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
Circle this one: Tyler Warren at pick No. 38 is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Quinshon Judkins at No. 69 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Emery Jones Jr. well ahead of where he belonged. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jaylin Noel at the 100th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They reached into another round for Shemar Turner, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A safety of that caliber at Round 5, Pick 6 is the definition of value, full stop. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They liked Seth McLaughlin enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 217. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A big swing on R.J. Oben at the 220th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Value said wait; Trey Wedig in No. 238 says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
