Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Alfred Collins, the No. 56 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 7 slot.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Value over need was the throughline, for better and worse.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.12
· Pick 12
· Abdul Carter
· DE-EDGE
· rank 3
Value with a capital V on Abdul Carter in the Round 1 slot, a genuine coup. A minor itch, scratched.
R2.1
· Pick 33
· Ashton Jeanty
· RB
· rank 2
Ashton Jeanty at the 33rd pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R2.12
· Pick 44
· Cam Ward
· QB
· rank 8
Cam Ward in pick 44 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.12
· Pick 76
· Jahdae Barron
· CB
· rank 13
Taking Jahdae Barron in pick No. 76 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.4
· Pick 105
· Jihaad Campbell
· LB
· rank 41
A linebacker of that caliber at Round 4, Pick 4 is the definition of value, full stop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.8
· Pick 109
· Walter Nolen
· DT
· rank 19
They robbed the room for Walter Nolen here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R5.11
· Pick 150
· Wyatt Milum
· OT
· rank 36
Somehow Wyatt Milum was still sitting there in No. 150, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.31
· Pick 170
· Armand Membou
· OT
· rank 22
Armand Membou in slot 170 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R6.16
· Pick 194
· Tre Harris
· WR
· rank 50
Tre Harris at the Round 6 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.31
· Pick 249
· Jack Bech
· WR
· rank 65
Steal is underselling it; Jack Bech at No. 249 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.39
· Pick 257
· Alfred Collins
· DT
· rank 56
Alfred Collins at slot 257 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
