New England Patriots

Grand theft in pick No. 222: the Patriots steal Reed and grade out a A-.

You build a draft on nights like this. Jaylen Reed had no business being available in the Round 7 slot, and the Patriots did the only sane thing and turned in the card.

They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. If Webb pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.

They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Adding Denzel Ward by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.

Few war rooms will sleep better than this one tonight.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.1 · Pick 33 · Jalon Walker · LB · rank 20
A tidy bit of business in the 33rd pick, where Jalon Walker graded well above the range. A minor itch, scratched.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Colston Loveland · TE · rank 21
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Colston Loveland at the 38th overall pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Tate Ratledge · OG · rank 74
A straight-up fair deal on Tate Ratledge at No. 67, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Donovan Jackson · OT · rank 86
They liked Donovan Jackson enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 3 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Elic Ayomanor · WR · rank 57
Elic Ayomanor in Round 3, Pick 13 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.30 · Pick 94 · Jordan Burch · DE-EDGE · rank 97
By-the-book stuff, Jordan Burch at slot 94 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.4 · Pick 105 · Tai Felton · WR · rank 103
Tai Felton in pick 105 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.6 · Pick 145 · Ajani Cornelius · OT · rank 114
A offensive lineman of that caliber at pick No. 145 is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.1 · Pick 219 · Clay Webb · OG · rank 251
Clay Webb at the Round 7 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
R7.4 · Pick 222 · Jaylen Reed · S · rank 188
The board fumbled Jaylen Reed all the way to the 222nd overall pick, and they scooped it up. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R7.22 · Pick 240 · Trevor Etienne · RB · rank 224
They let Trevor Etienne come to them and pounced at slot 240. The roster fit checks out.
