Somebody in the Round 5 slot was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Cowboys sat still while Chris Paul Jr., the No. 84 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
Every board in the league had McLaughlin lower, and that gap is the story. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 17 they get a matchup problem out wide, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
The board had Omarion Hampton higher than the 44th pick, and the running back fell to them anyway. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Deone Walker in pick 76 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Sai'vion Jones in pick No. 118 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Taking O'Donnell Fortune in Round 5, Pick 11 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Chris Paul Jr. in the 170th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Steal is underselling it; Jeffrey Bassa at the Round 5 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Circle this one: Logan Brown at No. 174 is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Seth McLaughlin in the 190th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A cornerback of that caliber at No. 211 is the definition of value, full stop. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They robbed the room for Roc Taylor here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
