If confidence were a draft strategy, the Vikings would have aced it. Julius Welschof at pick No. 179 is 173 spots clear of where he belonged. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
The whole projection now runs through Drake Maye; hit there and everything else looks smarter. The Gray pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. They will regret leaving safety for another day if the season turns on it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the safety spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
A reasonable price with a little left over, Drake Maye in No. 11. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Quinyon Mitchell at pick No. 42. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They paid sticker price for Tyrice Knight in slot 109, and that is fine. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Jordan Jefferson at the 130th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
No edge and no loss on Javion Cohen in the Round 5 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Cedric Gray at pick 157 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
They reached a country mile for Xavier Thomas at pick No. 166, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Value said wait; Julius Welschof in pick 179 says they were not listening. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They paid up for Zakhari Franklin at Round 7, Pick 7 when waiting would have done the job. The roster fit checks out.
