Kansas City Chiefs

The phones sank the Chiefs this weekend: D+.

The Chiefs torched the value chart for Jarrett Kingston, taking him 72 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D+.

The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it.

They banked enough surplus on Jones to cover a lot of smaller sins.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.10 · Pick 42 · Xavier Legette · WR · rank 38
Good price on Xavier Legette in the 42nd pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.32 · Pick 64 · Kiran Amegadjie · OT · rank 66
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kiran Amegadjie. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.32 · Pick 95 · DeWayne Carter · DT · rank 101
By-the-book stuff, DeWayne Carter at Round 3, Pick 32 squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R4.23 · Pick 123 · Elijah Jones · CB · rank 115
A slide stopped in pick 123, with Elijah Jones worth more than the price. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R4.32 · Pick 132 · Walter Rouse · OT · rank 163
Walter Rouse at the Round 4 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R5.6 · Pick 142 · Braiden McGregor · DE-EDGE · rank 173
Value said wait; Braiden McGregor in the 142nd overall pick says they were not listening. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R5.23 · Pick 159 · Dwight McGlothern · CB · rank 161
A straight-up fair deal on Dwight McGlothern at pick 159, value and slot in agreement. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
R5.30 · Pick 166 · Curtis Jacobs · LB · rank 198
Curtis Jacobs at the Round 5 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.37 · Pick 173 · Cornelius Johnson · WR · rank 188
A premium they did not need to pay, Cornelius Johnson a notch or two before his time. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R7.20 · Pick 240 · Sam Hartman · QB · rank 258
A wild overpay on Sam Hartman in the 240th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R7.32 · Pick 252 · Jarrett Kingston · OT · rank 324
Jarrett Kingston in No. 252 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
