The Patriots looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Solomon Byrd at slot 182 regardless, 39 picks early. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
The Jones pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. They punted on safety, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
The skill positions did well by the weekend.
Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 3 they get a No. 1 receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
A premium they did not need to pay, J.J. McCarthy a notch or two before his time. It fills a real need, too.
They paid sticker price for Brenden Rice in the 68th pick, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Blake Fisher in Round 4, Pick 4 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Logan Lee at the 136th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Solomon Byrd at No. 182 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the 229th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
