The search is over. The Commanders handed the keys to Jayden Daniels, and the whole operation now runs on his development. One of the weekend's best, top to bottom, and a A- to show for it.
The Johnson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They will answer for taking linebacker early while interior defensive lineman went begging.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Jayden Daniels and all.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 5 they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
The board had Brian Thomas Jr. higher than pick No. 36, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jordan Morgan. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Cade Stover went about where he belonged in the 68th overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in slot 69 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor need, but a need all the same.
The board had cheaper options than Jonah Elliss at the Round 3 slot, and it noticed. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Khyree Jackson at pick 100 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A want over a need in the 110th pick: James Williams adds a linebacker while interior defensive lineman keeps waiting.
They jumped the gun on Isaac Guerendo, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Trevor Keegan in the Round 4 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
By-the-book stuff, Anthony Gould at pick 139 squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jalyx Hunt at pick No. 152 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
Dwight McGlothern in slot 181 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Cornelius Johnson in the 222nd overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
