You could see the war room lean forward. Barrett Carter at No. 160 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.

If Lachey pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.31 · Pick 31 · Jalon Walker · LB · rank 21
In slot 31 they get a three-down second-level presence at a price that makes it sweeter. More want than need.
R2.31 · Pick 63 · Tate Ratledge · OG · rank 52
A quiet steal in No. 63: Tate Ratledge for less than the market said. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.31 · Pick 95 · Sebastian Castro · S · rank 85
The board had Sebastian Castro higher than the Round 3 slot, and the safety fell to them anyway. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.27 · Pick 128 · Luke Lachey · TE · rank 185
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Luke Lachey. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.23 · Pick 160 · Barrett Carter · LB · rank 79
They will replay Barrett Carter at the 160th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
R6.2 · Pick 177 · Chris Paul Jr. · LB · rank 118
Circle this one: Chris Paul Jr. at pick 177 is a fall that decides a draft. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
R6.8 · Pick 183 · Jaylen Reed · S · rank 225
They reached into another round for Jaylen Reed, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R6.39 · Pick 214 · Tonka Hemingway · DT · rank 228
A conviction pick on Tonka Hemingway at pick No. 214 that the board grades a round light. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
