The Eagles did not so much draft Jaylen Harrell as overpay for him, 44 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
With quarterback and running back unsolved, spending premium capital on linebacker is the choice that costs them. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Landing Guyton that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 22 they get a press-man option on the boundary. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A tidy bit of business in Round 2, Pick 18, where Tyler Guyton graded well above the range. A need, and now a little less of one.
A straight-up fair deal on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the Round 2 slot, value and slot in agreement. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They jumped the gun on Johnny Wilson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They liked Zak Zinter enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 86. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They took James Williams at par in pick 131, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A curious use of the 133rd overall pick. Quarterback and running back needed the pick; a linebacker in Cedric Gray did not.
The board had cheaper options than Dallin Holker at the Round 4 slot, and it noticed. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Christian Jones this early at Round 5, Pick 24. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jaylen Harrell at pick No. 162 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Gabe Hall at No. 197 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
