For all the boxes ticked, the Eagles skipped the loudest one: interior defensive lineman is exactly as bare as it was.
Cowing at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The Edwards reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 22 they get an anchor for the offensive line, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
T.J. Tampa at slot 50 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Junior Colson in the Round 2 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A slide stopped in pick 98, with Dadrion Taylor-Demerson worth more than the price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Nice patience on Jacob Cowing, who had no business lasting to the 161st overall pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A quiet steal in pick No. 171: Xavier Thomas for less than the market said. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They went early on Daijun Edwards in the 172nd pick, and the value did not follow. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A straight-up fair deal on Nathaniel Watson at No. 210, value and slot in agreement. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
