You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Eagles did exactly that with Curtis Jacobs in pick No. 172.
They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The McCaffrey pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
Cornerback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 21 they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In slot 22 they get a long-term starter on the line, reach and all.
They went early on Mohamed Kamara in the 120th pick, and the value did not follow. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Luke McCaffrey is a better player than pick No. 161 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Tykee Smith in the Round 5 slot. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A big swing on Curtis Jacobs at No. 172, well ahead of any board in the building. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Nathaniel Watson. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
