The Eagles did not so much draft Frank Gore Jr. as overpay for him, 76 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
They went 5 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 28th overall pick they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. The biggest hole, addressed.
They paid sticker price for T.J. Tampa in pick No. 45, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jermaine Burton at slot 60 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Value with a capital V on Christian Mahogany in the Round 3 slot, a genuine coup. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They reached a country mile for Ty'Ron Hopper at No. 137, and the board is aghast. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 156 with a little surplus value in Mike Sainristil. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 172, where Ashton Gillotte graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They reached into another round for Frank Gore Jr., and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A need, and now a little less of one.
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Restrepo at the 249th pick, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
