New England Patriots

A solid, sensible weekend for the Patriots: B.

The tape said wait; the Patriots did not. Elic Ayomanor went at Round 4, Pick 9, a good 26 picks before the board was ready. More right than wrong, and a B to match.

The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.

The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.5 · Pick 5 · Will Campbell · OT · rank 9
In the Round 1 slot they get a cornerstone up front. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · Jordan Burch · DE-EDGE · rank 45
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jordan Burch. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Domani Jackson · CB · rank 72
By-the-book stuff, Domani Jackson at Round 3, Pick 3 squarely in line with his ranking. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R3.8 · Pick 72 · Tyleik Williams · DT · rank 79
Tyleik Williams at the 72nd pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.21 · Pick 85 · Malachi Moore · S · rank 82
They did well to land Malachi Moore in the 85th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.7 · Pick 108 · Raheim Sanders · RB · rank 121
Raheim Sanders in No. 108 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.9 · Pick 110 · Elic Ayomanor · WR · rank 136
A big swing on Elic Ayomanor at the 110th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.6 · Pick 144 · Gunnar Helm · TE · rank 156
They paid up for Gunnar Helm at pick 144 when waiting would have done the job. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.2 · Pick 216 · Jason Henderson · LB · rank 220
They took Jason Henderson at par in pick No. 216, which is nothing to complain about. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R7.4 · Pick 218 · Kyren Lacy · WR · rank 214
Fair-plus on Kyren Lacy, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.14 · Pick 228 · Jasheen Davis · DL-EDGE · rank 245
They paid a round early for Jasheen Davis in slot 228, more than the board wanted. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
