The Commanders spent the pick that matters most on Caleb Williams, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
The Murphy reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 2 they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
They paid up for Kingsley Suamataia at pick 42 when waiting would have done the job. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Cooper DeJean at the 47th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Gabriel Murphy in No. 66, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Cedric Gray at slot 100 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They reached a country mile for Jaheim Bell at the Round 4 slot, and the board is aghast. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They talked themselves into Ben Sinnott at Round 5, Pick 3, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Isaiah Williams well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Kaden Prather in No. 223 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
