The phones were a trap the Eagles kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.
The Smith pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots still on the board. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. However the rest shakes out, Bullard at that price is a win they earned.
Job largely done: cornerback settled and 6 of 9 of the wish list covered.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick-by-Pick
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Troy Franklin. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jordan Morgan at pick 33 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They took Brandon Dorlus at par in the 53rd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Edgerrin Cooper at pick No. 57 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Troy Fautanu in No. 59, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Ja'Lynn Polk at the 60th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A curious use of pick 91. Interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots needed the pick; a DT-EDGE in Maason Smith did not.
Taking Javon Bullard in the Round 3 slot is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Roman Wilson at Round 4, Pick 1 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Nothing to complain about; Max Melton went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick No. 128 on Cedric Gray with interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Javon Foster at the 137th pick is the proof. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Edefuan Ulofoshio at slot 156 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
They let Jaylin Simpson come to them and pounced at the 161st overall pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Nice patience on Jaylen Wright, who had no business lasting to pick 168. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Value with a capital V on LaDarius Henderson in the 172nd pick, a genuine coup. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They robbed the room for Jalen Berger here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Ja'Had Carter is a better player than the 248th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
