You can draft well and still miss the point. The Eagles did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to edge rusher, which was the need that mattered most. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
They banked enough surplus on McCaffrey to cover a lot of smaller sins. They went 4 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
They did well to land JC Latham in the 22nd pick, just ahead of his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Edgerrin Cooper. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
T.J. Tampa at pick 53 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on James Williams at slot 120, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They read the board right and Luke McCaffrey was the payoff at the Round 5 slot. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Tykee Smith at pick No. 171 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Dwight McGlothern in the 172nd overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Caedan Wallace at No. 210 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
