The Patriots put a flag in the ground for Ray Davis, 41 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit.
However the rest shakes out, Corley at that price is a win they earned. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They went 3 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 3 they get juice off the edge, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Bralen Trice. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Ray Davis in the 68th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Malachi Corley at Round 4, Pick 4 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
No drama and no debate, Luke McCaffrey went about where he belonged in No. 136. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tyrone Tracy Jr. in the 182nd overall pick, miles early. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They talked themselves into Xavier Thomas at pick No. 229, and the board did not agree. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
