Nobody else had Jackson Woodard anywhere near pick 240. The Patriots did, by 88 spots, and that gap is the whole story. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
Reed falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th overall pick they get a workhorse for the backfield at fair value. A real need, handled.
They went early on Aireontae Ersery in the 38th pick, and the value did not follow. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
No drama and no debate, Tate Ratledge went about where he belonged in the Round 3 slot. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board had cheaper options than Ozzy Trapilo at slot 77, and it noticed. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They barely believed it either: Danny Stutsman still on the board at No. 105. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A big swing on Oronde Gadsden II at Round 5, Pick 6, well ahead of any board in the building. The roster fit checks out.
Andrew Armstrong at slot 219 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board fumbled Jaylen Reed all the way to Round 7, Pick 4, and they scooped it up. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A wild overpay on Jackson Woodard in pick 240, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
